HOUSING AND HABITABILITY According to the Office of Lead-Based Paint Abatement and Poisoning Prevention, "Childhood lead poisoning is the most common environmental disease of young children." (EPA, 1996) Lead salts were added to paints as coloring agents and stabilizers during the Industrial Revolution. This lead-based paint was used to paint both exterior and interior surfaces of apartments, homes and buildings built prior to 1978. Subsequently, the federal government has since banned lead-based paint from housing in 1978. (HUD, 2007) Lead poisoning is caused by ingestion of lead from paint, soil, household dust, and even by drinking contaminated water. Lead paint that has deteriorated will mix with soil, is tracked into homes and becomes mixed with household dust. Children are often poisoned through the ingestion of paint chips or playing in contaminated soil. Lead-based paint can resurface and pose a hazard when paint surfaces crack, scale, peel and chip or become loose. Lead poisoning can cause brain, kidney, and nervous system damage. The effects on the central nervous system are mostly irreversible and include mental retardation, behavioral problems, and language deficits. Symptoms of lead poisoning are varied and dependent on the age of the exposed person and duration of exposure but include anemia, abdominal pain, irritability, slurred speech, lethargy, convulsions, coma, and even death. There are some simple things that you can do to protect your family from exposure to lead. The most important is basic hygiene and cleanliness. Wipe off dirt from shoes before walking into a house, mop dirty or dusty areas in the house and keep child play areas clean. Children should also keep from placing fingers or toys in their mouths. Hand hygiene is also very important. Children should wash their hands before eating or going to bed. This will limit accidental exposure through ingestion. If painted surfaces within the house are deteriorating, then repairing such areas will temporarily reduce the hazards. To permanently remove the painted lead hazards, someone that is certified in lead abatement should be hired. Certified workers have specialized training to properly and safely remove the paint and clean up residual dust. (HUD, 2007) Another household hazard present in many American homes is mold. Concerns in recent years have been brought up because of the causal relationship between mold and allergies, asthma, and exposure to mold- producing toxins. According to a 1999 May Clinic Study, "nearly all chronic sinus infections afflicting 37 million Americans are a result of molds." (Mann, 2002) Mold can grow on walls, ceilings, carpets, furniture and other household surfaces. Mold spores can cause serious health problems but mold doesn't affect everyone in the same manner. On each turn, players are given three rolls to obtain several different objectives. After each roll, a player may decide which of the dice (if any) are to be retained and which are to be rerolled. The objectives include a variety of different kinds of combinations, many of which are taken from poker. Every different kind of combination is worth a different amount of points. Two of the types of combinations that players must roll are called straights: a small straight and a large straight. Like poker straights, these combinations consist of sequential dice. Small straights employ four of the five dice and large straights use all five dice. Due to the randomness of the rolling of dice, the probability can be used to analyze how likely it is to roll a small straight in a single roll. Political Correctness Political correctness is a political ideology, nothing more. I believe political correctness is a political ideology and it cannot be correct unless it is linked to genuine transformation. First, I will examine the origins of political correctness to try to get a clear understanding of what this movement is. Second, I will show you that political correctness is political and how it became a political ideology. Lastly, I shall discuss why this ideology does not work. Political correctness is cultural Marxism. Marx, as cited in Introduction to Social Science course guide, believed that if people were left to work on their own they would be more efficient. He had an ideological belief that laborers could actually want to work hard without being forced to. Political correctness as noted by Lind (www.university.org) is just Marxism converted from economic into cultural terms. This is how far back one has to look in order to understand how political correctness came about. Political correctness goes back further than just twenty years ago as Cameron (1995) stated. I believe it started even before the nineteen sixties. As Lind noted it probably can be traced back to World War one. Lind noted the Marxist theory that when the First World War came the working class would over throw the bourgeoisie government. However, this did not happen. In 1923 as Lind further notes, a â€Å"think-tank† was established in Germany and took on the role of translating Marxism from economic into cultural terms, which created political correctness, as we know it today. An institute for Marxism was formed however the people who started this institute decided it was better not to openly identify it as a Marxist institute. The last thing political correctness wants is for people to figure out it is a form of Marxism. As Cameron stated, † The people who are characterized as adherents of the ‘political correctness movement’ strenuously deny that any such movement exist†. So instead, they decided to name it The Institute for Social Research. And so the question of â€Å"Critical theory â€Å"began. This theory is simply about criticizing. As Lind states, it calls for â€Å"the most destructive criticism possible, in every possible way, designed to bring current order down†. How does this â€Å"critical theory† get to the rest of the world? Well, in 1933, the Nazis come into power and not surp... ...e that? That is how political correctness is. It does not work unless people’s ideas change. In conclusion, it is clear that Political correctness dates back to World War one and was formed by ideological beliefs. Political Correctness’s true meaning has been forgotten. It has become a political movement, which limits thoughts. Ideologies are political beliefs and Political correctness is exactly that. An ideology, which cannot be correct unless attitudes change. Political correctness is therefore political and genuine transformation needs to take place before it can ever be correct. My stepmother was born in Masan, the countryside of Korea, to a family of four daughters. My step-grandfather was a hard working man. He had a small taxi and truck business. My mother’s youth was during the recovering of the war. My mom has told me stories about growing up. She rarely got nice things unlike how a lot of Korean children now get today. However, she says growing up was not as hard as most kids during the time. â€Å"Korean kids have to learn how to respect their elders,† my mother states. â€Å"For example at the dinner table you do not start eating until the elders start.† She says that hitting kids was a common thing and teachers even hit their students who failed to do assignments and do their responsibilities. It is also part of Korean culture for the eldest son to take care of the parents. Back then; the parents would even live with the eldest son even after he has married. Today, it has changed a lot and most parents would rather live alone. Children are supposed to live at home with their parents until marriage. In the United States, it was not as strict. It was common for men to move out of their parents home at eighteen and start working or go to college. These days not all Koreans still follow the culture but still, many do. Back then, Korea was recovering from war and a lot of parents were focused on their children’s education. They would do anything for their education. So, kids would do nothing but study. â€Å"I would go to school at seven in the morning and not finish until ten at night. I ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner at school,† my mom says. She studied a lot. Generally, Korea’s students study a lot more and harder than the average American. It was not until around high school years when her father made more money and became successful. My stepmom even paid for most of her college and travel expenses. She traveled to Australia to learn English and did a lot of missionary work all over the world years later. I think all of those years of studying hard paid off for her. I learned that my mom is very strict about certain things pertaining to me because of how she was raised. For Christmas, she received an orange. In today’s world, it is common for kids to go out to the mall and hang out with their friends and buy a few things. At least, that is how it is in America. My mom did not have that. In her view, kids are not really supposed to receive much money from their parents. The money should stay with the parents. I learned that the United States and Korea today share some culture similarities and some drastic differences. I feel that by learning more about cultures outside of your own one really opens up new ideas and different ways of thinking. By learning more about Korean culture over the years, I feel that I have become an a lot more open minded individual and it has made me a stronger today. Works Cited: Kim, Tara. Moments later, he uses indirect action again to reveal Trepolev’s suicide.
